- Biography
- Made county ( state ) rugby and athletics teams at 15 years of age before breaking my neck in a rugby match. Luckily I had only temporary paralysis. Spent six weeks in hospital and had a Cloward's Procedure ( thank you USA - Dr Cloward pioneered this procedure as a consequence of the Pearl Harbour attacks, there were a lot of military personnel with spinal injuries ) involving a cervical vertebral fusion and then self rehabilitated my self over the coming weeks, months and years. For a while sports were out and I had to become an accademic starting with me going back one year in my education ... I was already behind my peers so this didn't help. I eventually gained the necessary qualifications to go to college and study Human Biology, Psychology and Physical Education. I had ideas on being a physical therapist. I gained three A'Levels, two grade B's and a grade A in Physical Education. I studied for a BA (Hons) Degree in Sports Studies. During these years I was fit enough to go back to my summer sports of Shotokan Karate, swimming and weights. I started a part time job as a life guard and fitness instructor having accredited with the American College of Sports Medicine. I also enjoyed a few years teaching weight lifting to groups of adults with varying degrees of learning difficulties, including Down's, Autism and Cerebral Palsy, etc,. I then managed to get a trainee cardiac technician job within the NHS ( during a recession ). I completed my basic cardiac technician training gaining Distinctions and a Higher National Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurements. I then passed my ECG training and became a member of the Society of Cardiological Science and Technology. I started to build on my skills as a cardiac technician in all areas of cardiac investigations - echo, treadmill testing, resting and ambulatory ECG's, cath lab work, pacemaker implant and follow-up, etc, etc, as well as Advanced Life Support which I now have to be tested on yearly. Whilst at my previous hospital employer I was invited to help with the cardiac rehab programme. This enabled me to make use of my knowledge in rehabilitative exercise programming and so I gave two talks per month to 20 - 30 heart patients on ' Safe & Effective Exercise '. I gradually worked my way up the ranks from trainee technician, to basic grade, to senior and am at this present time a Chief Cardiac Physiologist. Over the years I added a Post Graduate Diploma and then a Master of Science Degree in Cardiology to my qualifications. Recently I achieved professional accreditation with the British Society of Echocardiography and the Australian Institute of Radiography. Whilst teaching cardiac rehab patients I started a News Letter titled ' The Association of Cardiac Athletes ' which proved popular and brought like-minded people together but I wanted to reach out to more people and so in 2001 I decided to set up this website ... you know the rest ... Enjoy !!!
